Overview

Glacier National Park in northwestern Montana is often called the "Crown of the Continent." With over 700 miles of trails, 200 lakes, and the legendary Going-to-the-Sun Road, it offers a full spectrum of outdoor experiences — from easy lakeside strolls to rugged multi-day backcountry routes.

Best Things to Do

  • Going-to-the-Sun Road — A 50-mile mountain road crossing the Continental Divide at Logan Pass. One of the most scenic drives in the world. Vehicle size restrictions apply.
  • Logan Pass & Hidden Lake Trail — Wildflower-filled meadows, mountain goats, and views of Hidden Lake. One of the best short hikes in any national park.
  • Grinnell Glacier — A 10-mile round-trip hike to an active glacier. Boat shuttles shorten the approach significantly.
  • Many Glacier area — The most scenically dense part of the park. Hike to Iceberg Lake or Cracker Lake for turquoise water surrounded by sheer cliffs.
  • Backcountry camping — 65 backcountry campsites accessible from hundreds of miles of trail. Permit and bear canister required.

Getting There

Fly into Kalispell, MT (FCA) — about 30 miles from the west entrance. The park is accessible from both east and west sides; the Two Medicine and Many Glacier areas are accessed from the east.

Planning Tips

  • Going-to-the-Sun Road typically opens mid-June and closes in October.
  • Vehicle reservations required for GTSR June–September (limited time windows).
  • Grizzly bears are common — always carry bear spray.
