One of the seven natural wonders of the world — 277 miles of canyon, 1 mile deep, and 10 million years in the making.

Overview

The Grand Canyon is one of the most awe-inspiring places on Earth. The Colorado River carved this mile-deep canyon over millions of years, exposing nearly two billion years of geologic history. The South Rim is accessible year-round; the North Rim is open mid-May through mid-October.

Best Things to Do

  • Bright Angel Trail — The most popular and best-maintained corridor trail. Descend to the Colorado River in a challenging 2-day trip, or day-hike 3 miles to Indian Garden (now Havasupai Gardens).
  • South Kaibab Trail — Steeper and more exposed than Bright Angel, but offers the best panoramic views. Ideal for descents; use Bright Angel to ascend.
  • Rim Trail — An easy 13-mile paved path along the South Rim with constant views. Accessible and stroller-friendly.
  • Colorado River rafting — Motorized and oar-powered trips range from 3 days to 3 weeks. Motorized permits are extremely limited; apply years in advance.
  • North Rim — Less-visited and 1,000 feet higher than the South Rim. The North Kaibab Trail descends to Phantom Ranch at the canyon bottom.

Getting There

Fly into Las Vegas (4.5 hours) or Flagstaff, AZ (1.5 hours). No public transportation runs to the South Rim from nearby cities; a car is required.

Planning Tips

  • Never hike to the river and back in a single day in summer — heat kills. Experienced rangers say "down is optional, up is mandatory."
  • Phantom Ranch at the canyon bottom has dorm beds and cabins; book more than a year in advance.
  • Water is available at several points on the Bright Angel Trail. Carry at least 1 liter per hour of hiking.
