Camping with Kids: The Complete Checklist
Camping with children requires a few extra considerations beyond the standard gear list. The payoff is enormous — kids who camp develop confidence, resilience, and a love of nature that stays with them for life.
Kid-Specific Gear
- Age-appropriate sleeping bag (30°F bag for most 3-season camping)
- Foam sleeping pad (more durable and warmer than inflatable for kids)
- Child-sized headlamp with simple on/off button
- Rain gear that fits (kids' rain jacket and pants)
- Sturdy closed-toe shoes (sandals are a tripping hazard on trails)
- Extra set of everything (kids get wet and dirty)
Safety Essentials
- First aid kit with children's pain reliever and antihistamine
- EpiPen if applicable
- Whistles for each child (teach them to blow 3 times if lost)
- Bright-colored clothing for easy identification on trails
- Sunscreen (SPF 50+ for kids)
- Insect repellent (DEET-free for young children)
- Bear spray (adults carry; teach kids what it's for)
Entertainment & Education
- Junior Ranger workbooks (free at most national parks)
- Field guides to local birds, trees, or insects
- Binoculars (kids love them)
- Magnifying glass
- Glow sticks for after dark
- Card games and a small Frisbee or ball
Food Strategy
- Familiar comfort foods (first camping trip is not the time to experiment)
- Plenty of snacks for the car and trail
- S'mores supplies (this is mandatory)
- Individual labeled water bottles for each child
