  • State fishing license (purchase online before you go)
  • Trout stamp (if targeting trout in most states)

  • Extra line (10–15 lb mono for most freshwater)

Terminal Tackle

  • Hooks (assorted sizes 6–1/0 for most freshwater)
  • Split shot weights

  • Live bait (nightcrawlers, leeches, minnows — pick up locally)

  • Fishing net (rubber mesh for catch and release)

Safety & Comfort

  • PFD/life jacket (mandatory on boats in many states)
  • Sunscreen SPF 50
  • Polarized sunglasses (reduces surface glare, helps spot fish)
  • Sun hat with neck drape
  • Insect repellent
  • Rain jacket
  • First aid kit

Food & Water

  • Water (at least 2 liters per person)
  • High-energy snacks
  • Cooler with ice (for keeping fish)
